I am Group Captain ( Dr) Mandeep Singh ( Retd) an AFMC batchmate and friend of Dr. ( Air Cmde ) Vikas Kulshrestha . I have known him for more than three decades and don’t cease to marvel at his brilliance, expertise and devotion which grows by leaps and bounds with time.

I suffered a severe acetabular fracture following an accident in 1994, and subsequently underwent hip resurfacing in 1998. Over the years, my hip developed progressive pain due to cup loosening and wear on the acetabular side. By 2015, I had significant shortening, a painful limp and considerable difficulty with mobility.

I needed a complex revision hip replacement, which was a challenging surgical proposition because of the previous fracture, bone loss, shortening and failed hip resurfacing. After meticulous planning Dr Vikas Kulshrestha performed my complex revision hip replacement at Command Hospital in 2021.

The surgery involved specialised trabecular metal acetabular implants and an equine xenograft. The graft was imported specially for me at the behest of Dr Kulshrestha, because of which , the deficient acetabulum could undergo successful reconstruction. After the surgery my mobility was completely restored and the leg length shortening and limb deformity which was causing severe anguish was finally corrected and I could walk freely without pain.

I have known Dr Vikas Kulshrestha both as a colleague and as my surgeon. He has trained with the best in the world and at the best centres in the US and Europe very early in his professional career and he brought that world class excellence to his surgical practice. He is renowned not only in the Armed Forces but in the entire orthopaedic fraternity for his extensive experience in joint replacement, complex hip surgery and orthopaedic trauma.

Apart from his gifted brilliance in surgery, his compassion and personal care to every minor detail of my comfort during my treatment journey gave me confidence and hope. He never delegated any procedure, even suture removal, to his subordinates lest I feel that I did not get his full attention at all times. He explained the surgical procedure and what to expect in the post- operative period , in detail to me and my family members and patiently addressed our worries and anxieties. In this way he created a peaceful environment for my entire family which did wonders for the healing process. He personally instructed the physiotherapy team and regularly assessed my progress with them to ensure a complete success of the surgical outcome. I interacted with many of his patients during my hospital stay and each one of them had the same high words of praise for him.

I am deeply grateful to him for giving back my active life. Five years after my revision I am extremely happy to say that I have excellent pain free mobility. Dr Vikas Kulshreshta’s expertise has given me back what I thought I had lost for good - an active and energetic living. He has healed not only my hip but the hearts of my family members who are very happy to see me in a recovered state of health .

I wish to add that we are not from Bangalore , but we reside in Chandigarh . We took a flight and hired an accommodation to be in Bangalore so that Dr Kulshrestha could operate on me. I am thankful to God that we took this decision.

I recently underwent a femur revision surgery under his care. After my accident, I had consulted several doctors in Delhi, Jaipur, and other places, but I was not satisfied with the responses or treatment options I received. I feel extremely fortunate to have found him for my surgery and treatment. Around 2–3 months after the surgery, my leg already feels stronger and my walking has improved considerably. I am hopeful that, with continued recovery, I will be able to run marathons again someday.
