This can affect any organ in their body.They often may initially mimic infections.Their presentations may evolve over a time period varying from few days to several years.Their diagnosis maybe overlooked or missed unless looked for or thought about.Their treatment modalities differ from other illnesses.They form a part of differential diagnosis of many childhood illnesses.By “autoimmunity” we mean the body fails to recognize ‘self’ as ‘self’. This happens due to infections or an unknown endogenous (internal) or exogenous (external) trigger. It triggers a response from the body, harming ‘self’.There are many such autoimmune illnesses in children.Initially many of these look similar.Slowly, with time, they can differentiate.Sometimes, there maybe no definite diagnosis.Some of these children can be very ill or may get more unwell over time.Whatever is the cause or type of autoimmune illness, it can get scary for the parentsand child and sometimes even for their physician.The aim of management is preservation with minimal/no damage or disability.The management depends on the diagnosis and/or severity of illness.At Harrison’s Pediatric Rheumatology & Autoimmunity Clinic, we look after children with such conditions.
