WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne commonly known as pimples is simple skin condition which is caused because of the blockage of the hair follicle duct with the dead skin cells and oil secreted by the skin
HOW ARE ACNE FORMED?
When the hair follicle duct opening on the skin surface is blocked due to excess secretion of oil or sweat along with the dead skin cells they form black heads or white heads called as comedones in medical term.
If these black heads are not removed on time, leads to increase in the bacteria who survive on the oil and dead skin resulting into inflammatory or commonly called as active acne
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ACNE?
Oily skin – that could be due to
- Hormonal disturbances in the body leading to produce more oil
- Due to use of excessive cosmetics products which are oily
- Excessive sweating
- Hereditary oily skin
- Hormonal derangement such as PCOS

Non inflammatory acne – Black heads and white heads
Inflammatory acne - Active acne with red coloured bumps
WHO CAN GET ACNE?
Most commonly young girls and boys ranging from an age group of 13 to 28 have acnes’
But sometime even adults with age more than 30yrs can also face a problem of acne. In such females it is necessary to rule out any hormonal imbalance causing acne.
Rarely new born or 1yr old child and can also have acne and it is because of influence of maternal hormone on baby
WHERE CAN U GET ACNE?
Most commonly acne are present on whole face but in severe cases it may be present on neck, chest, back, and arms
In very severe cases patients may have acne even on buttocks
HOW DO THEY LOOK LIKE?
Non inflammatory acne – looks like skin pores clogged with black and white material called as black heads and white heads
If u try to feel the skin it feels like rough and sand paper like
Inflammatory acne - they looks like red coloured mildly painful boils on the skin surface ranging from few millimetres to 1-2 cm
In severe cases pus can also be formed at the opening end in the boil and in severe cases whole of the boil may be filled with pus and form big cyst
This acne if not treated well may heal; with black, brown coloured pigmentation and scars
Scars may be red or skin coloured and may be depressed or raised above the skin surface
CAN ACNE BE TREATED?
Yes, of course, it is a treatable disease. Root cause of the acne is necessary to be targeted for the effective management. It can be treated with the help of oral medications as well as local applications
Newer modalities like laser systems give quicker results in treatment of acne.
Pigmentation caused because of acne can also be treated with help of creams and laser system
Acne scars can be treated with different modalities like surgery, dermarollers, PRP, fractional resurfacing etc
