World Mental Health Day happens every year on October 10th. It began in 1992 thanks to the World Federation of Mental Health and gets support from the World Health Organization. The main goal is to get people all around the world to talk openly about mental health and to stop treating it as something to hide. Each year since 1994, there's a special theme to focus on, and this year it's all about saying that "Mental health is a universal human right."
In our country, around 56 million people are thought to be dealing with depression, and 38 million are facing anxiety disorders. The World Health Organization tells us that not taking care of mental health could cost us over $1.03 trillion between 2012 and 2030 (1). In India, most folks, more than 80%, don't have access to mental healthcare, and that's a big problem (2).
So, what can we do about mental health?
First, talk to someone you trust, whether it's a friend, family member, or even a helpline. Pick a place where you feel comfy, and get ready for their reaction, which might not always be what you expect. Be patient with them and kind to yourself.
If you want to help someone with their mental health, find a quiet spot to talk, pay full attention, and ask questions to understand better. Don't forget to ask how you can help without telling them what to do.
Conclusion:
In the words of Mel Robbins, "Your mental health is everything — prioritize it." We must overcome our fear and shame to start vital conversations about mental health, collectively working to eliminate the stigma. It begins with us.
