Many patients are surprised when they hear they need a root canal treatment (RCT) instead of a simple filling. The reason lies in how deep the decay has gone inside the tooth.
When a cavity is small and affects only the outer layers — enamel and dentin — a filling can restore the tooth. But when decay reaches the pulp, the innermost layer containing nerves and blood vessels, it causes pain, infection, or swelling. At this stage, simply sealing the cavity with a filling won’t help — the infected pulp must be removed to save the tooth. A root canal treatment cleans the infected tissue, disinfects the canals, and seals the tooth permanently. A crown is then placed for strength and protection.Without an RCT, the infection may spread, causing severe pain, abscess, or even bone loss. So, when we recommend a root canal instead of a filling, it’s to save your natural tooth and prevent complications later.
