Flatulence is the passage of air or gas from the intestines through the rectum. Flatulence is a by-product of the digestion process and is normal. Studies suggest that the average person breaks wind up to as many as 15 times a day! Flatulence becomes a problem only when the gas you pass out smells foul, happens frequently, is painful or occurs at inconvenient times.

To control excessive buildup of gas in the body follow the instructions below:

AVOID :

  • Avoid all raw foods,especially salads.
  • Avoid the following vegetables:Green peppers(capsicum),Radishes, Cucumbers, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Peas.
  • Fruits to be avoided in this condition: Apples,Watermelon, Avocado, Muskmelon, Banana, Apricots.
  • Avoid maize flour and Bajra (to a lower extent) because they induce flatulence.
  • Dals and Pulses such as kidney beans (rajmah), Soya beans, Chana dal, Tur dal, Moth,Chick peas (Kabuli Chana), Roasted Chana.
  • Avoid all corn products-Popcorn,Corn flakes, Baby corn, and Sweet corn.
  • Among nuts avoid Peanuts.
  • Dairy Products: Milk, Ice-cream and Cheese (for persons allergic to lactose)
  • Avoid the following which introduce excess air and gas into your system: smoking, chewing gums, drinking carbonated drinks.

ADD :

  • For people suffering from excessive flatulence Moong Dal is the safest that can consumed.
  • Soaking Beans in water for at least 12 hours and then cooking them with fresh water will help reduce their gas-inducing properties.
  • Bishop’s seeds (Ajwain): A teaspoon of ajwain with a little rock salt is a popular household remedy for indigestion and gas.
  • Buttermilk: Sprinkle a quarter teaspoon of pepper powder and cumin powder in your buttermilk.It is an effective remedy for relieving gas.
  • Cinnamon (Dalchini): Coarsely powder and boil cinnamon in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper powder and honey. Drink half an hour after meals. This is effective in relieving gas in the stomach.
  • Mint: Mix the juice of mint leaves with a little honey and lemon juice for gaseous distension of the stomach.

LIFESTYLE MODIFICATION

  1. Give a gap of at least three hours after every meal and before you consume any solid food.
  2. Please check if you are a victim of lactose intolerance. It has been observed that majority of population groups are unable to digest milk protein and this leads to a buildup of gases.
  3. Eat slowly and chew you food thoroughly .The more the food is chewed the more it is broken down for the digestive system.
  4. If you enjoy sprouts, steam them lightly before consuming.
