Tooth decay is a gradual process caused mainly due to food lodging in the teeth. When food doesn't get cleared from the mouth it forms acid in that particular area. This acid starts to dissolve teeth. So that portion of the teeth gets invaded with more bacteria. The decay builds up eventually and invades enamel first. If not taken care of at this stage, it invades dentin.

Sometimes when the decay is in enamel, the patient doesn't have any sign or symptom. At this stage the cavity can be filled with cement. But if neglected, the cavity reaches dentin (which is the sensitive layer of the tooth,) the tooth becomes sensitive.

If still not taken care of and if the cavity reaches pulp, which is the most sensitive layer of the tooth, then the tooth starts hurting badly. The line of treatment at this stage is root canal treatment.

To avoid tooth decay:

  • Brush twice a day.
  • Use mouth wash twice a day.
  • Use floss to clean the inter-dental food getting lodged everyday.
  • And yes, do not forget to gargle after every meal.
