Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a chronic medical condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. It occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood, which, over time, can cause serious damage to many of the body’s systems—especially the nerves, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and heart.

Types of Diabetes

1.Type 1 Diabetes

How is Diabetes Diagnosed?

•Random Blood SugarAn HbA1c level of 6.5% or higher usually indicates diabetes.

Treatment & Lifestyle

While Type 1 diabetes requires insulin therapy, Type 2 can often be managed with lifestyle changes and medications.

•Insulin (especially for type 1 or advanced type 2)

•Other oral or injectable medications depending on individual needs

Lifestyle Modifications

•Healthy eating: Focus on whole grains, vegetables, lean protein, and low-GI foods

•Regular exercise: At least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week

•Weight management

•Blood sugar monitoring

•Stress reduction and adequate sleep

•Avoid smoking and limit alcohol

 Long-Term Complications (If Uncontrolled)

•Heart disease and stroke

•Kidney failure

•Vision loss (diabetic retinopathy)

•Nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy)

•Foot ulcers, infections, and potential amputations
