Ankle sprain is one of the commonest injuries of lower limb (legs) , but still remains to be inadequately treated leading to long standing foot and ankle problems.  .Results from twisting force to ankle joint (ankle forced to bend more than normal) which results in injury to ligaments of ankle joint (outer side).

Although most ankle sprains completely recover with proper treatment, it is important to provide efficient and high-quality care in an attempt to prevent recurrent sprains and long-term disability.

Treatment of Ankle sprain is done in 3 phases-

Immediate Phase(0-72hrs) – Acute care (to control pain swelling and inflammation)

Intermediate Phase (4– 10days) - Physiotherapy

Final Phase(11-28days) - Rehabilitation

It is important to complete all the 3 phases of treatment to minimize recurrent sprains and long-term disability. Please note– Clinical studies has shown that early weight bearing (putting weight on injured foot) helps ankle sprains to heal more quickly. Always try to walk normally by putting weight on the heel. If you are struggling to put weight and walk, try using elbow crutches for few days to assist in walking. Please follow Home Exercise therapy as suggested by PHYSIOTHERAPIST.

These exercises should be continued for minimum of 5-6 weeks in order to ensure complete recovery.
