Pigmentation on the face may develop due to a large number of conditions.

Melasma is a common condition. It is commoner among females. Pregnancy, oral contraceptive pills or sun exposure are important causes of this. This is known for its extreme resistance to all forms of treatment.

There are many other causes of facial pigmentation. Many cases are familial:

  • Ageing is a known cause of skin darkening.
  • Hormonal imbalance is another known cause.
  • Obesity can lead to pigmentation of the face and body folds.
  • Allergy to cosmetics, perfumes, aftershaves and hair dye, can cause pigmentation. Some medications can cause pigmentation as their side effects.

There are some rare causes of facial pigmentation. Treatment of skin pigmentation depends on the right diagnosis. The wrong treatment causes more harm than good. It must be understood that most cases of skin pigmentation may take a prolonged period to respond satisfactorily. This fact should be accepted. Any unnatural expectation often leads to a wrong decision. Over the counter drugs with a promise for a rapid recovery usually results in irreversible damage to the skin.
