Oral prophylaxis is a dental procedure that removes tartar and plaque build-up from the teeth through scaling and polishing. Its purpose is to prevent gum disease, stop tooth decay or other dental issues. Through the process, the dentist normally cleans under the gums and the surface of the teeth. Prophylaxis is an important dental treatment for halting the progression of periodontal (gum) disease.

Periodontal (gum) disease can occur when bacteria from plaque colonize on the gum tissue. These bacterial colonies cause serious inflammation and irritation which in turn produce a chronic inflammatory response in the body. As a result, the body begins to systematically destroy gum and bone tissue, making the teeth shift, become unstable, or completely fall out. The pockets between the gums and teeth become deeper and house more bacteria which may travel via the bloodstream and infect other parts of the body.

It is a myth that teeth become loose after scaling, in fact the procedure actually removes irritants surrounding the teeth thereby strengthening the gums and bone around them. Prophylaxis is an excellent procedure to keep the oral cavity in good health and also halt the progression of gum disease.

Benefits of oral prophylaxis-

  • Tartar removal- tartar (calculus) and plaque build- up, both above and below the gum line can cause serious problems if left untreated.
  • Aesthetics-prophylaxis can get rid of unsightly stains on teeth and give u a beautiful smile.
  • Fresher breath- the removal of plaque, calculus and bacteria noticeably improves breath and alleviates irritation.
  • Stops bleeding on brushing-inflamed gums often bleed on brushing , prophylaxis restores the gums back to health.
  • Improves gum health- healthy gums provide a strong anchorage to teeth.
  • Prevents bone loss-prophylaxis gets rid of bacterial colonies which destroy bone and gum tissue.
  • Reduces bacterial count in the mouth- this helps not only to prevent tooth decay but also increases the longevity of any dental treatment performed in the mouth, such as dental fillings, implants and orthodontic treatment.

Prophylaxis is recommended twice annually as a preventive measure, but should be performed every 3-4 months for periodontitis sufferers.
