Night-time cough in children can happen due to multiple reasons and does not always mean chest infection.
Common causes include:
- Viral cough
- Allergy
- Post-nasal drip
- Dust exposure
- Asthma tendency
- Enlarged adenoids
Sometimes children appear fine during the day but start coughing after sleeping because mucus drips backward or airways become more sensitive at night.
What parents can do:
- Keep room dust-free
- Avoid smoke exposure
- Give adequate fluids
- Elevate head slightly while sleeping
- Avoid self-starting cough syrups repeatedly
Medical review is important if:
- Cough lasts more than 2–3 weeks
- Child develops breathing difficulty
- Exercise-induced cough occurs
- Weight loss or fever is present
- There is a family history of asthma
