Night-time cough in children can happen due to multiple reasons and does not always mean chest infection.

Common causes include:

  • Viral cough
  • Allergy
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Dust exposure
  • Asthma tendency
  • Enlarged adenoids

Sometimes children appear fine during the day but start coughing after sleeping because mucus drips backward or airways become more sensitive at night.

What parents can do:

  • Keep room dust-free
  • Avoid smoke exposure
  • Give adequate fluids
  • Elevate head slightly while sleeping
  • Avoid self-starting cough syrups repeatedly

Medical review is important if:

  • Cough lasts more than 2–3 weeks
  • Child develops breathing difficulty
  • Exercise-induced cough occurs
  • Weight loss or fever is present
  • There is a family history of asthma
