Rheumatology is a relatively newer field of medicine although Rheumatic Diseases have been around since ancient years. Rheumatology is a field which encompasses disorders of joints but also ligaments, tendons, muscles and often conditions which affect the entire body. We often hear of autoimmune conditions in which the body’s own cells attack various organs in the body. Commonly known conditions are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, SLE or Lupus amongst many others. Awareness about these conditions is lacking among the society and often we see patients at very late stages. The delay in correct treatment often means joint deformities and pain and restrictions of one's movements, affecting their quality of life. It is often a myth that arthritis affects only the elderly. Most of our patients are often young individuals in their prime. Although women are affected most commonly, men are often affected as well. Symptoms of joint and back pain are common. However when these occur for extended periods of time along with warmth and swelling in the joints, stiffness especially in the morning hours, restricting your daily activities, you may need to seek medical help. Fatigue and weight loss often accompany these symptoms. Some patients express a feeling of being “feverish” especially during the flare. Different conditions have varying symptoms and require a comprehensive consultation to arrive at the correct diagnosis. This should be done early so that long term disease morbidity can be prevented. The general perception about these conditions is that there is no “cure”. However there is a lot we can do to control these ailments, to the extent that the individual can lead a pain free and completely normal life. New drugs and molecules are being discovered which have changed the way we treat our patients. Therefore it is important to create awareness about Rheumatic conditions to facilitate an early diagnosis.
