Ultrasound or Mammogram: Which Is Better for Breast Cancer Screening?

For routine breast cancer screening, a mammogram is generally the preferred test.

Ultrasound provides additional information when needed but usually does not replace mammography.

Why choose a mammogram?

A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to detect breast changes, sometimes before a lump can be felt. It can identify tiny calcium deposits that may signal early cancer and may not be visible on ultrasound.

When is ultrasound useful?

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves without radiation. It helps assess a lump and distinguish a fluid-filled cyst from a solid mass. Doctors may recommend it after an unclear mammogram or as additional imaging for selected women with dense breasts.

Which test do you need?

The choice depends on your age, symptoms, breast density and family history. Some women need both tests. Discuss your screening schedule with your doctor.

Seek medical assessment for a new lump, skin dimpling or bloody nipple discharge—even if your recent screening was normal.
