is an inflammatory condition of the inner knee at anserine bursae of the conjoined insertion of Sartorius, Gracilis, and Semitendinosus. Most common in patients with existing knee disorders. Female > Male 

 CAUSES :... 

Repetitive stress - activities like running(uphill), swimming(breaststroke), cycling, side to side movements

 • Muscle weakness/ tightness – knee and hip muscles (common hamstring)

 • Poor training – no warm ups or stretching. Sudden increased intensity or distance

 • Medical conditions like – Diabetes type 2, Osteoarthritis of knee,  Osgood schlatter’s disease 

• Flat feet 

• Obesity 

• Direct trauma  

CLINICAL PRESENTATION : 

• Pain and tenderness at inner aspect of knee more during climbing stairs, sit to stand, night. 

• Swelling of knee

 • Decreased muscle strength and ROM 

• Altered gait

 • Postural dysfunctions

 • Sleep disturbance TREATMENT : 

• Rest - avoid painful activities 

• Icing for 10 – 15mins – to reduce swelling

 • Medication – anti inflammatory  & pain killers 

• Stretches – hamstring stretching

 • Strengthening exercises 

 • Physical therapy – such as ultrasound 

• Steroid injections 

• Surgery  

PREVENTION : • Proper exercise technique

 • Corrective and appropriative foot wear during exercise

 • Gradual increase in training intensity / quantity

 • Correction of muscle imbalance  

• Proper warm up and cool down period
