Smallpox was a serious viral infection that took many lives before effective immunization was discovered by Edward Jenner. In 1980 , the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the eradication of smallpox following successful vaccination around the world. India was declared polio free on 27th March 2014 by WHO .

The above mentioned success story was possible just because parents like you, who trusted the government in their immunization process.

Parents are now confused by the multiple sources for vaccination information. This article written to reduce the confusion among parents.

In india ,we have two kinds of vaccination schedules -

1) National immunisation schedule(NIS)-set of vaccines provided  by the government at free of cost (available in government hospitals, medical colleges etc).( refer Table 1)

2) Recommended by Indian academy of Pediatrics- contains additional vaccine not yet part of NIS- private clinics /private hospitals .( refer table 2)

Parents can choose either of the vaccination schedules for their children (do not mix both).
