Many parents get worried when their child suddenly starts passing green-colored stool. In most cases, green stool is not dangerous and can happen due to food changes, viral infection, iron supplements, or certain medicines and probiotics.
Green stool can commonly be seen during:
- * Viral gastroenteritis
- * Fast bowel movements/loose motions
- * Iron-containing syrups
- * Certain antibiotics or probiotics
Parents should observe the child’s activity, appetite, urine output, and hydration rather than focusing only on stool color.
Seek medical attention if:
- * Blood is present in stool
- * Child becomes very sleepy or inactive
- * Repeated vomiting occurs
- * Severe stomach pain develops
- * Child is unable to drink fluids
- * Signs of dehydration appear
Most mild viral stomach infections improve with adequate fluids, ORS, zinc supplementation, and proper diet.
Avoid unnecessary antibiotics unless advised by your pediatrician.
