Principles of good end of life care 

Good end of life care is based on the understanding thatdeath is inevitable, and a natural part of lifeAs the final stage in a person's life, it is a uniquelyimportant time for the dying person and their family and close friends.The primary goals of end of life care are to:  Maintain the comfort, choices, and quality of life of aperson who is recognised to be dying (by themselves or others)

Support their individuality Care for the psychosocial and spiritual needs of themselvesand their families, which can include support for families, if needed, afterdeath as bereavement careEnable the person to retain control over their remaining life.

Reduce inappropriate, futile     and burdensome healthcare interventions, and to offer a choice of place ofcare when possible.

Good Death?

Knowingthat death is coming and having some understanding of what to expect.

Having some control over pain relief and other symptoms.

Beingable to retain some control over where death occurs and how it happens .

Maintaining a sense of dignityHavingthe opportunity to prepare for death .

Havingthe chance to say goodbye.. Havingfew regrets

Reconciling damaged or broken relationshipsBeingable to have a say in end of life care and to ensure wishes are respected.
