Mr Ravikumar Jagtap (M/40) walked into clinic accompanied by a friend. He came with the complaint of hearing loss. His medical history revealed that  he was diagnosed with Drug resistance TB and had to take course of 60 streptomycin injection which are ototoxic in nature. At the age On Audiometry evaluation it revealed that it was Bilateral profound Sensorineural Loss. at the age of 22 he had had valve replacement done for his heart. I knew that hearing aids would have limited benefit for him. Once I fitted the most powerful hearing aids he was happy as he started having detection of sounds. However after a week he returned saying he was not able to understand the conversation. i counselled him for the needd of Cochlear Implant surgery. His vital reports revealed that due to blood thinner meidcinces his BT and CT levels were way to high. He also could not be operated under GA due to his heart condition. ENT referred him to a cardiologist who monitored his BT and CT after changing his medications prior to surgery.  He had to be operated under LA (its done under GA as being a major surgeries) for the cochlear implant surgery. the surgery was uneventful and he was discharged from hospital in two days. On the day of '"switch on" of the processor he could not only detect the sounds but also  discriminate them and understood most of the conversation also. The man who had walked into the clinic accompanied by a friend and had not travelled alone for a long time came to meet me after six months all alone. he has to change three trains to come the clinic.  he is back to his work and talks effortlessly on phone as well.
