A sudden twist while playing, a “pop” in the knee, and swelling within hours: these are classic signs of an ACL tear. Many people walk it off and delay care, which can lead to a loose, unstable knee and further damage to the meniscus and cartilage.

See an orthopedic specialist if you notice:

  1. A popping sound or sensation at the time of injury
  2. Swelling in the knee within a few hours
  3. The knee “giving way” while walking or turning
  4. Pain or difficulty putting full weight on the leg

What to do right away: Rest, ice, compress, elevate, and avoid sports until the knee is examined. An MRI and a clinical exam confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment: Depending on age, activity level, and the extent of the injury, treatment may range from physiotherapy to arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, a minimally invasive keyhole procedure.

Early diagnosis protects your knee and gets you back to activity safely.
