Photofacials (Photorejuvenation) are different from regular facials done in spa/parlours. It is a term used for skin treatments that use some form of light-based technology (usually Intense Pulsed Light {IPL}), primarily for treating pigmentation, wrinkles and redness (erythema) on the skin.

What are the indications of Photofacials?

Photofacials can be used for a wide variety of conditions like:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Dull looking skin
  • Telangiectasias (tiny visible blood vessels)
  • Liver spots or age spots
  • Rosacea
  • Spider veins
  • Fine lines/ Mild wrinkles

How long does a Photofacial session take?

  • A photo facial is a very gentle treatment that uses the light of a specific spectrum depending on the condition treated. It usually takes around 30 minutes to one hour for each session, depending on the area of skin being treated. During the session, the patient can only feel some degree of warmth which helps in relaxation. It is absolutely painless and safe procedure.

How does the skin appear after a session of Photofacial?

  • Immediately after the session, some amount of redness is noted over the treated areas, which usually subsides in 1-2 hours. The pigmented lesions may become a little darker initially and begin to fade off after a few days. The skin usually feels refreshed, smooth and fresher looking after the session.

How many sessions are required for good improvement in the skin?

  • Photofacials are done as a series of treatments. Initially, six sessions are done once in 2 weeks and later, maintenance sessions once monthly may be needed to get the best results. The number of sessions, however, varies from one individual to another depending on the nature of skin and degree of involvement.

How should one take care of their skin after a Photofacial?

  • It is extremely important to follow instructions given by your dermatologist. A suitable sunscreen along with a couple of other night creams are usually given. These can help you to maintain the glow on your skin for a long time.
