Types of Gum diseases

Untreated gingivitis in advance stage can lead to periodontitis and can also lead to loss of tooth and other health problems.

A. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the initial stage of periodontal disease.

Look out for these signs and symptoms:

1. Swollen & puffy gums 

2. Bright red & dusky red gums

3. Bleeding gums etc 

It is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate Oral hygiene, diabetes, smoking, aging, stress, inadequate nutrition, hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, and certain medication uses, etc. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment (cleaning & polishing), 2 times regular brushing, water flossing and good oral care.

B. Periodontitis

Untreated gingivitis in advance stage can lead to periodontitis.  With time, plaque can spread and converted into calculus. 

Look out for these signs and symptoms:

 1. Swollen gums

 2. Bright red & dusky red gums 

 3. Bleeding gums

 4. Pus between teeth & gums 

 5. Bad breath may occur

 6. Pain on chewing 

 7. loose teeth

 8. New spaces started between your teeth

 9. Gums can pull away from the tooth

 10. Bone loss 

Periodontal disease is generally due to bacteria in the mouth infecting the tissue around the teeth, inadequate oral hygiene, diabetes, smoking, aging, stress, inadequate nutrition, hormonal fluctuations, and certain medication uses, etc. 

Treatment involves good oral hygiene  (includes 2 times brushing and water flossing daily), regular 6 months of Dental cleaning & root planing & polishing. In some cases, antibiotics or dental surgery (bone grafting surgery) may be recommended.
