In the video Dr. Vinod Kumar Mishra, an eminent gastroenterologist speaks about peptic ulcers, a very common gastric condition.

Peptic ulcer is a sore or a lesion in the mucosa or lining of the digestive tract. These sores are caused due to the action of digestive acids such as pepsin and gastric acid and are typically found in the stomach or duodenum. The ulcers in the stomach are called the gastric ulcers and those in the duodenum are called duodenal ulcers. Gastric ulcers mainly present as pain in the epigastric region. The pain may be continuous and associated with burning sensation or may aggravate immediately after food intake. In comparison pain in duodenal ulcers is felt (aggravated) 2-3 hours after food intake, and more often the pain is severe during night.

The diagnosis for peptic ulcers is made based on detailed clinical history, evaluation of the symptoms and diagnostic tests which include endoscopy and radiology. However, radiological tests are not that common in the current days and endoscopy is often considered the gold standard diagnostic test for peptic ulcers.
