Oral Health

In india, most of the people are unaware about the simplest secret, which makes a severe complication in the beauty of our smile. That’s malocclusion. In our previous  issue (kanichaaru sep’11), I, Dr. S. Bhuvaneshwar Karthick, had narrated about the eruption sequences of the teeth with the help of a chart. And if the teeth of yours aren’t following the order of the chart or the age & eruption sequence of yours, it will lead to severe malocclusion in the future ages. Here, we reveal about the malocclusion of teeth.

Malocclusion is a misalignment of teeth and/or incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dental arches. The term was coined by Edward Angl, the "father of modern orthodontics"

People who have more severe malocclusions must require orthodontic and sometimes surgical treatment (orthognathic surgery) to correct the problem. Correction of malocclusion may reduce risk of tooth decay and help relieve excessive pressure on the temporomandibularjoint. Orthodontic treatment is also used to align for aesthetic reasons.

How Malocclusion Arises?

  • Thumb Sucking
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Pacifier sucking
  • Onychophagia (nail biting)
  • Genetic (Inherited trait)
  • Delay in Eruption Sequence
  • Childhood Dental Caries
  • Cleft Lip/Palate

Studies of social psychology indicate that “an unattractive teeth appearance may evoke an unfavorable social response in many facets of social interaction.

The individual's adjustment to his own imperfections in dental alignment is invariable and there are so many evidences that children with visible irregularities will in general be emotionally handicapped.

Very soon, we, the dental surgeons, will bring beauty to our nation by correcting our children’s smile more beautiful.

Thank you!
