Doctors have reported that there have been increased incidences of body aches, muscle cramps (sudden involuntary contraction of muscles), and myalgia (muscle pain) amongst patients who have recovered from COVID-19.
Research suggests that such incidences are normal and in some way, they are the result of virus interaction with the host immune system. Muscle cramps and/or myalgia may persist even after 6 to 9 months post the novel Coronavirus infection.
Let's take a look at the common musculoskeletal complications post COVID-19 and how to manage them.
Common Musculoskeletal Complications
The different types of musculoskeletal complications post COVID-19 recovery include:
Myalgia and muscle cramps in the upper and lower back and calf muscles (the back portion of the lower leg)
Joint pains in the shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle
A tingling sensation in your hands or legs
Inability to walk long distances
Fatigue (tiredness)
Home Care Measures
Here are some easy home care tips, including simple exercises to manage post-COVID-19 muscle cramps and muscle pain.
Take adequate rest until you feel comfortable enough to move around or walk.
You can try hot water compression in the targeted areas where you feel muscle pain for 3 to 4 times per day until you feel better. This will gradually improve muscle pain and weakness.
To ease cramps and muscle pain, stretch the target muscle group. It could be anywhere in your neck, back, arms, legs, or ankle.
You can gradually switch to the rotation of your neck, arms, wrist, knee/leg and ankle. Begin with mild intensity exercises and gradually build up the intensity. Care should be taken regarding the direction of rotation. You can do it either clockwise or anticlockwise.
You may avoid forward bending as this may put unnecessary strain on your back and/or neck.
You can do yoga to keep your mind and body relaxed.
Drink lots of water and have a balanced diet.
Stay active and avoid sitting in one position for a prolonged period.
Keep your laptop or computer screen at eye level, while working.
To ensure your legs and feet are comfortable, wear shoes with proper fitting and soft soles.
Avoid walking barefoot to prevent foot injury.
You can also try an alternative to hot compression treatment. Take a bucket of hot water and another bucket of cold water. Dip both feet in hot water for 5 minutes, then in cold water for 5 minutes. Repeat this cycle 3 to 4 times a day for 2 weeks.
Keep stress at bay to boost your immunity and increase the levels of “happy hormones” such as dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin.
If you feel that these tips are not helping you with post-COVID-19 muscle pain, you can visit a general physician or an orthopaedic surgeon.Your doctor will investigate your medical history, enquire about your current symptoms, perform a thorough physical exam, and recommend certain diagnostic tests such as X-rays.
Based on their diagnosis, your treatment will be planned. Your doctor may prescribe medications such as vitamin tablets or capsules, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and muscle relaxants. Avoid self-medication as it can lead to unwanted complications.
Staying aware of your body’s needs will help you in the long run to lead a disease-free life. Till then, take all the necessary precautions and keep yourself safe against COVID-19.
