Even though the vagina has a very crucial role in bringing new life into this world, still its health is not a very common topic of discussion.
As a woman, vaginal health is an essential part of your overall health and well-being. It comprises good hygiene practices, a balanced diet, and certain lifestyle choices.
We bring forth some ways to help keep your vagina healthy and happy
1) Instill good hygiene habits
- Avoid using douches or feminine hygiene sprays as they are known to disturb the friendly bacteria environment around the vaginal area. They can disturb the natural pH (i.e. 3.8 and 5.0) of the vagina and cause bacterial vaginosis (overgrowth of bacteria).
- Always make a habit of wiping front to back after using the toilet.
- During the menstrual cycle make sure to change your sanitary pad and tampon at regular intervals and if you are using a menstrual cup empty them after every 12 hours.
2) Avoid irritants
In the name of vaginal washing, many companies are selling you perfumed products that hold no value. The fact is your vagina is a self-cleaning organ, you do not need anything to clean it.
However, if you still wish to clean it, use non-scented products. But, do not wash inside the vagina, only wash the labia majora (outer part/lips of the genital area).
3)Stay hydrated
Drink an adequate amount of water around two liters to keep yourself hydrated. This will ensure the overall health of your body including vaginal tissues.
4) Wear comfortable underwear
Make sure to wear comfortable underwear primarily made of 100% cotton as they allow your vagina to breathe. This will ensure proper air circulation and prevent moisture buildup; as moisture provides a favorable environment for bacterial growth.
5) Eat a balanced diet
Try to incorporate
- Curd and yogurt: in your diet they act as a probiotic which increases the number of good bacteria and also keeps your pH balanced.
- Cranberry: is full of antioxidants and acidic compounds which help to fight urinary tract infections (UTIs).
6) Practice safe sex
- Make sure to engage in protected sexual intercourse to avoid the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Peeing after having sex will also prevent you from STIs.
- If you use a sex toy, make sure to sanitize it properly before inserting. Avoid them or use alternative products if you are allergic to their material.
Vaginal health is not a destination to achieve. It is a lifestyle that you have to maintain daily. As a woman, you should put some extra effort to know your body parts and how to take care of them.
