Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease causing inflammation and ulcers in the intestinal lining, particularly large intestine and colon. The condition does not have a definitive treatment and the treatment is mainly directly towards relieving symptoms. In the majority of cases, it is treated with medications. Medications are effective in treating the symptoms in about 90% of patients. The classes of drugs that are widely used are:

  • 5 aminosalicylic acids
  • Corticosteroids
  • Immunomodulatory therapy azathioprine - usually recommended in steroid dependent patients.
  • Biological medicines - recommended for uncontrolled ulcerative colitis.

Surgical options are mostly considered in:

  • Emergency cases - when there is development of serious complications such as toxic megacolon (expansion of the colon), severe uncontrolled bleeding, and increased risk of blood clots.
  • Elective surgery - when medicines were not effective in relieving symptoms adequately or there is risk of development of cancer over the ulcerative colitis.
