More than 40 per cent of children aged 5–10 years of age experience tooth decay in their primary teeth. This can result in pain, food avoidance, disruption of sleep and behavioural problems. Poor oral health in childhood can lead to oral health problems in adulthood. Increasingly correlate poor oral health in adults with the incidence of major chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and kidney diseases.

The value of regular dental care. Regular dental visits assist children to maintain good teeth cleaning habits and helps with the early detection of oral infections through the examination of gums, lips, and inside of the mouth. Children should first visit the dentist at 12 months of age or with the eruption of their first teeth.
