It can be tempting to hope and assume that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is over, especially during the festive season. As Diwali approaches, celebratory feelings are in the air, and it may be enticing to go about its preparations as in any other year. Unfortunately, it is not any other year. It is 2021, and the pandemic is still very much a part of everyone’s life.

The number of daily cases is steadily declining, and it is very easy to let go of inhibitions and precautions while you shop, celebrate with those around you, or burst those merry-looking firecrackers.

This Diwali, take measures to be safe and keep others around you safe, not just from COVID-19, but from any harm in general.

Tips to Celebrate a Safe Diwali

1. Avoid large gatherings. Keep celebrations low-key this year. Spend time at home with family members and avoid gatherings or visiting too many friends. Gatherings could result in the spread of COVID-19 infection.

2. Follow social distancing measures. Wear masks at all times and maintain physical distance, even in small gatherings. Encourage others to wear masks as well. Avoid physical greetings like hugs and greet people from afar.

3. Include masks and hand sanitisers as gifts. Along with traditional Diwali gifts, add COVID-19 essentials like sanitisers, masks, and disinfectant sprays to your gift hampers. It is a good way to remind people to be safe.

4. Keep the elderly and unwell indoors. Senior citizens and individuals who feel unwell should avoid gatherings at all costs as they could fall ill more easily and infect others as well.

5. Avoid firecrackers. Firecrackers can have severe adverse effects for COVID-19 patients and those suffering from other respiratory issues in your vicinity. The pollution from the firecrackers may cause breathing difficulties even in healthy individuals. It is best to limit or avoid them.

6. Be careful with sanitisers. Sanitisers are alcohol-based and hence inflammable. It is important to use them to prevent yourself and others from catching microbes. However, refrain from using sanitisers before lighting diyas or candles and keep them at a good distance from any source of fire. Experts suggest that you wash your hands with soap and water before doing anything that involves fire.

7. Refrain from going to crowded areas. You might be tempted to eat outside at your favourite restaurants or shop to your heart’s content this Diwali. However, many others will have the same idea as you and all these places could be really crowded, creating the perfect environment for the spread of COVID-19. Instead, opt for the home delivery of goods and food.

8. Be prepared for unprecedented events. Keep some water close by wherever you are celebrating and stock your first aid box and keep it handy. Also, keep some contact numbers within easy reach for any medical emergency.

Celebrate Diwali in all its glory but look out for the safety and wellbeing of those around you.

Wishing you a happy and safe Diwali!
