Major part in prevention of anaemia in diabetes patients:
- Restriction of sodium intake to half of the normal intake in daily diet.
- Daily fluid intake around 2.5 litres (including the fluid content of foods) is sufficient to halt progression of diabetic nephropathy and renal cause of anaemia.
- Protien diet should be not more than 1gm/kg body weight per day.
- Consumption of iron rich foods will slow down the progression of diabetic nephropathy and hence anaemia.
- Iron reach foods are Green leafy vegetables/legumes/dry fruits/fish and poultry products/red colour fruits like apple, strawberry/cherry/plum. Products like tea/coffee should be avoided.
- B12 rich products are meat and fish.
- For vegetarians B12 supplement capsules should be considered .
- Vit C is required for absorption of iron.
- VitC reach products are Citrus fruits,guava, strawberry, broccoli,pepper,etc
- Folate is required for RBC production
- Sources reach in folic acid includes spinach peas oranges,cantaloupe, avocado, brocolli, bitter gourd, dry fruits.
