Diet for inflammatory bowel disease/ gastrointestinal problems:
- Possible Causes: Complex interaction of environmental factors, changes in intestinal flora, various genetic factors that tend to change along with vivid changes in the immune system of the body
- Risk Factors: Factors that contribute to such condition are excessive sugar consumption, animal fats, and linoleic acid
- Protective Role: This role is played by high fibre and citrus fruits consumption
Note: During the disease term period low fibre diet is given
Foods to avoid:
- Aerated drinks and beverages (basically all gas forming food products)
- Chocolates and bakery items (foods that are high in sugars)
- Animal proteins like meats, eggs, organ meats, red meats, etc
- Fats and oily foods especially ones rich in cholesterol
- Trans fats: bakery items and others
- Refined carbs and sugars
- Extra spices and condiments
- Milk
Foods allowed:
- Milk products like curd, paneer, tofu·
- Foods rich in high fibre particularly from fruits
- Vitamin c rich foods are highly encouraged
- Fruit juices may anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative
- Germinated barley
- Whole grain products (avoid chokar during the term of disease)
- Gingelly seeds, lotus stem
- Nuts (only in prescribed amounts)
- Oranges, tamarinds, and citrus foods
- Yellow and red fruits and vegetables like carrots, bell peppers etc
- Psyllium seeds are also reported useful
Instructions for lifestyle:
- Take frequent small meals around 6-8 meals a day
- Use multigrain flour and don't strain it (avoid fibre during the course of the disease)
- Use combinations of oil
- Eat plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables
- Drink 12-16 glasses of water daily
- Go stress-free
- Go for a daily walk for around 30-45 mins daily
- Don't intake heavy and bulky meals at night
- Have dinner before 3-4 hours you sleep
