All relationships are based on sensitive and open communication. And this is no less true for your relationship with your young one. It's an important part of your role as a parent. It's important that you find effective ways to let her know that you are there for her, which eases out much of your stress as a parent.

A good listener is a good communicator

Communication entails you need to be able to listen well. When you listen carefully as she tries to speak, it comforts her. And it's more likely she is going to listen to things that you need to communicate to her.

Learning to be a good listener.

Believe it or not, your young one is probably a much a better listener than you are. She may be too young to understand all that you tell her, but she is lends the extra ear out curiosity and interest. Your baby is the best example of a good listener.

Giver her time

As a parent, a lot of things come in the way of your listening like too much work or you need to attend to something else etc. At the moment, it may seem alright to attend to something more important and let her concerns wait. But contrary to what you think, your little one probably needs all your attention at the time.

Convert her physical gestures into words

It may be a little more time before your little one begins to use words and sentences to communicate her needs. Until then be sensitive to her gestures of communication, understand them and do the best you can. As you listen to her, convert her gestures in to words and sentences. Familiarise her with spoken language. This will also help her learn to speak to express herself.

Find the right time and space to talk

Sometimes  it's absolutely impossible to attend to your baby as and when she needs you. There is something else that needs to be prioritized. Don't get flustered or irritated. Speak to her softly but firmly. Let her know it's just not the right time or place to talk things over. And that you will be there in a little while.

Keep your word

More importantly, do not forget your promised talk. Get back to her once you are done and give her the time she deserves. It's never a very good idea to make them wait too long, because she's yet to learn the art of patience.

Give her all your attention

When you listen to your little darling, make sure you give her your full attention. Don't let distractions come in the way. Try not splitting your time between some other work and speaking to her.

Don't interrupt when she speaks

It takes a lot for your little one to speak or try to speak. Your interruptions and questions only discourage her from further communication. Let her finish what she has to say. Fill in the blanks for her only when she asks for help. When you let her finish, it shows you care about what she has to say.

Maintain eye contact

As she tries to speak to you, maintain eye contact, nod occasionally and encourage her further with sounds like “uh-huh” or “mmm”. Also drop in a smile to let her know that you are listening and you are interested.

Keep your interest

Learn skills that help you express better to your baby. This allows her to be open with you. Keep insecurities at bay and strengthen the bond of trust and love between the two of you.
