The respiratory system is fundamental to life—it supplies oxygen to our bodies and expels carbon dioxide. Ayurveda views this system as governed mainly by the Kapha and Vata doshas. Kapha controls the mucus and fluids in the airways, ensuring they remain moist and protected, while Vata regulates the airflow and rhythm of breathing. When these doshas are balanced, breathing is smooth and efficient, supporting vitality.

Unfortunately, modern lifestyles expose us to pollution, allergens, and sudden weather changes that can disrupt this delicate balance. When Kapha is aggravated, mucus can accumulate, leading to congestion and sluggish breathing. Excessive Vata can cause dryness, irritation, and spasms, contributing to conditions like asthma or bronchitis.

To keep the respiratory system healthy, Ayurveda recommends several practical approaches.

Pranayama, or controlled breathing exercises, help expand lung capacity, improve oxygen exchange, and detoxify the respiratory pathways.

Nasya therapy, where herbal oils or powders are gently administered through the nose, helps clear blockages and maintain sinus health.

Ayurvedic herbs such as tulsi (holy basil), pippali (long pepper), and licorice soothe inflamed respiratory tissues and boost the immune system. These are commonly consumed as herbal teas or used in steam inhalation.

Diet is another pillar of respiratory health. Fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, and warming spices like ginger and black pepper balance Kapha and prevent mucus buildup. Avoiding cold, heavy, and oily foods is important to reduce congestion.

Regular outdoor exercise boosts lung function and clears toxins, as does spending time in clean natural environments.

Through a holistic combination of herbs, breathing techniques, diet, and lifestyle, Ayurveda offers a powerful path to clear lungs and vibrant breathing.
