The person not realising the problem in itself is a huge problem in most cases of mental illnesses and personality disorders. Many of us get bogged down at this stage itself. Schizophrenia as such needs medication and with that the best thing to do initially is to consult a psychiatrist (and not a psychologist). A psychologist can help a lot once the medication brings the person to some level of normalcy, in maintaining the improvement. There are very good medications available these days for schizophrenia. In most cases, the medication is going to be long-term to life-long. Arriving at a stage in which the person takes the medicines regularly can be considered as a great milestone in the line of treatment. Reaching there requires a lot of understanding from the caregivers and close family members. A psychologist can help them understand the ways to reach this stage for which they may visit one themselves, without the person concerned (the schizophrenic). Since it is going to be difficult to get the person to the psychiatrist, it will be ideal for the caregiver to visit the psychiatrist without the person and seek help in getting the person's resistance to visit a doctor reduced or removed. They usually guide / prescribe medicines that will reduce the resistance of the patient.
I would remind you that while dealing with a schizophrenic, the caregivers and close family members need to understand the disease thoroughly and exercise a lot of patience and commitment if success has to be achieved. These tend to lack in most cases resulting in the patient remaining untreated.

Hello. Thank you for reaching out. Schizophrenia cannot be cured but it can definitely be controlled and the quality of life can be increased plenty! It will however, require one to stick with treatment, like medication and counselling/therapy. If started early, symptoms can be highly subsided.
