Hi, cap has to be decided by 2 factors
1- your clinical and anatomical structure.
2- your budget. (Metal is cheaper)
When you use single layer cap- only metal or only ceramic, the tooth reduction is less compares to 2 layer cap,
But there are lot other clinical factors which decides the cap.
Go to cap specialist (MDS ,prosthodontist) and as per your budget ask them for single layered cap. In case it’s a front tooth and budget is a problem than go for ceramic mixed with metal .

Hi! Yes it’s definitely crucial to put a crown after a root canal especially on your molars and premolars to retain normal function. Depending on the amount of tooth structure left and amount of distance left between the tooth treated and opposing tooth you can go for either of these options. PFM ( metal and ceramic) is good choice for back teeth as it requires less preparation of tooth but if the bite is aggressive the top layer of ceramic sometimes chips off otherwise it’s a good option. Zirconia ( metal free) crowns have very high strength and durability for the back teeth and it’s one of the strongest material in dentistry , so of there is adequate space between upper and lower tooth and tooth structure , you can go for zirconia as well.
The physical properties of both the material are almost the same, with few differences.
Full Ceramic caps are more aesthetically appealing, majorly advised for the tooth in the smile region(front teeth area).
Metal ceramic caps are majorly used for chewing teeth(back teeth)
But full ceramic can also be placed depending on the clinical situation on the back teeth.
Hope this clarifies your doubt.
Next Steps
Visit the dentist and have a consultation/discussion done.
It depends on which tooth you are getting treated, ceramics are usually choosen more in front tooth for esthetic purpose, for posterior we can go in for metal ceramics also
