Pus after tooth extraction and RCT
I had a sleeping wisdom tooth that caused decay in the 2nd molar. I got my wisdom tooth extracted and RCT on the 2nd molar. 4 weeks after the wisdom tooth extraction (2 weeks after RCT, I got a severe infection with pus) I was given antibiotics and pain and swelling went down. However the pus didn't stop. I got an x-ray and no issues were present, no pain whatsoever but there is very slight pus when I press on that area. Now doctor is suggesting CBCT (3d xray). He is suspecting that gums have not closed or there is an issue with bone growth. How serious is my situation? What are the chances something major has happened. Thank you.

Hello, There can be several reasons for the discomfort you’re experiencing. It might be due to issues like incomplete root canal treatment, a missed canal, or possible contamination during the filling of the tooth. Sometimes, food getting stuck in the gums can also cause similar symptoms. To give you a proper opinion, I would recommend sharing an X-ray of the tooth. Based on your provided history , the treatment might involve removing the previous filling material (gutta-percha), thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the canals, followed by refilling them properly. Meanwhile, I suggest you do warm saline rinses 2-3 times a day to keep the area clean and reduce discomfort. -Dr. Anand Mali Owner & Chief Dentist Dr. Anand Multispeciality Dental Clinic ,Navlakha,Indore
Next Steps
1. Get an X-ray done – This will help us see what’s happening inside and around the tooth. 2. Visit your dentist or an endodontist – After evaluating the X-ray, the dentist can confirm if a retreatment is needed. 3. Follow advised treatment – If retreatment is needed, the old filling material will be carefully removed, the canals will be cleaned, disinfected, and refilled properly. 4. Maintain good oral hygiene – Keep the area clean, avoid hard or sticky foods on that side, and continue warm saline rinses 2-3 times daily.
Health Tips
• Don’t ignore pain or swelling – It could mean the tooth needs attention. • Warm saline rinses – Do 2-3 times a day to soothe the area and reduce bacteria. • Avoid chewing hard or sticky food on the affected side until the issue is treated. • Maintain oral hygiene – Brush gently, floss carefully around the area. • Get an X-ray – It’s important for accurate diagnosis. • Regular follow-ups – Even if the pain reduces, don’t skip your dental visits until fully treated.
