First get yourself assessed properly to know the cause of knee pain...then do gradual strengthening of muscles under proper supervision of Occupational therapist or physiotherapist. Your own muscles are the best knee cap .. external support won't help you in long term.
Next Steps
also check for your Vitamin B12 levels. At times deficiency causes pain in joints.
Health Tips
Avoid straining the joint at this stage by avoiding long standing, climbing stairs, gym etc

Get yourself assessed properly. If there is any change in daily activities check on that. Increase in weight might have also added up in pain. Avoid using knee cap as it will stiffer your knee more.
Next Steps
Visit an orthopaedic or a Physiotherapist
Health Tips
Hot water packs to relief pain temporarily.
