Your symptoms suggest significant insomnia affecting daily functioning. When Melatonin is ineffective, underlying causes like anxiety, stress, or mood issues should be evaluated. Persistent sleep loss can cause headaches and fatigue. Avoid self-medicating and maintain strict sleep hygiene—fixed timings, no screens before bed, limit caffeine. Short-term medications may help, but long-term improvement often requires therapy like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). I strongly recommend consulting a psychiatrist for a detailed assessment and personalized treatment plan to restore healthy sleep.

Hi, Thanks for reaching out. I understand you're going through a lot. Not being able to sleep properly for a month and getting only 3–4 hours of sleep can understandably make you feel exhausted and cause headaches. Since melatonin has not helped, it is important to evaluate the underlying cause of your insomnia rather than relying only on over-the-counter sleep aids. In young students, common reasons for persistent insomnia include: • Academic stress or anxiety • Irregular sleep schedule • Late night screen use • Excess caffeine/energy drinks • Underlying anxiety or mood issues A few things you can start immediately: • Maintain a fixed sleep and wake time, even on weekends • Avoid mobile/laptop screens at least 1 hour before bedtime • Avoid caffeine after 4- 5 PM • Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation before sleep
Next Steps
It would be advisable to consult a psychiatrist or sleep specialist. Sometimes short-term medications along with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) are required to restore a healthy sleep cycle.

Sleeping only 3–4 hours for a month suggests significant insomnia. If melatonin has not helped, a proper clinical evaluation is needed. Advice: • Maintain a fixed sleep schedule (same sleep/wake time daily). • Avoid caffeine, naps, and screens at night. • Use bed only for sleep. • Consult a psychiatrist for short-term treatment and to rule out anxiety/stress-related insomnia.

Your symptoms suggest significant insomnia. Since over-the-counter melatonin has not helped and sleep has reduced to almost none, you should consult a psychiatrist for proper evaluation and short-term medication. In the meantime maintain good sleep hygiene (avoid screens before bed, caffeine, and maintain a fixed sleep schedule). If the problem continues for more than a few days, please seek medical consultation.
