Chronic insomnia often continues even after leaving night shifts because the brain can develop a persistent “hyper-alert” sleep pattern. Since you are already taking medications, avoid stopping them abruptly without consulting your psychiatrist. A detailed reassessment is important to identify contributing factors such as depression, anxiety, circadian rhythm disturbance, sleep apnea, caffeine/nicotine use, or other medical conditions. The most effective long-term treatment for chronic insomnia is often Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), alongside gradual medication tapering under supervision. With proper evaluation and treatment, recovery is very possible, and many patients regain normal sleep.

Hi It’s very concerning when sleep is maintained by medications and sub subsequently facing mood issues As sleep hygiene is already practiced , our focus should be more on medication From the history you have mentioned, the diagnosis can be more of a mood disorder, leading to depression, rather than just insomnia So we need to assess day-to-day activities ,mood , lack of energy, and lack of interest, appetite, repeated thoughts, dreams, and even past history and family history A combination of SSRI s and benzodiazepines will help initial stage and later use of SSR is only

Hi How many hours are you sleeping currently? Do you struggle more with falling asleep or staying asleep? And do you feel sleepy during the day or just tired and frustrated? After 6–7 months of insomnia, the problem is often not just sleep itself but the anxiety and fear around not sleeping. The more you try to force sleep, the harder it becomes. Since you’ve already tried sleep hygiene and changed shifts, I would strongly suggest CBT-I (therapy specifically for insomnia) along with your psychiatrist’s guidance for gradually reducing medications. Please don’t stop Zolfresh or other tablets suddenly on your own. Take therapy. You can connect with me on nine two six six seven two six zero six five.
