High uric acid
I am taking Febustat40 from February 2025 to control high uric acid,i had gout attack 3 times before that, even while taking Febustat40 i had gout attack in April, july and September 2025, but since october 2025 till now( about 9 months) i face no gout symptoms and my uric acid is under control remains below 5,
Now should i try to tapper Febustat40 so that i can stop it in future or i have to continue it lifelong, does Febustat40 have side effects if taken long?

It's great that your uric acid has been well-controlled for 9 months. Febustat 40 is generally safe for long-term use, but tapering is possible in some patients after sustained control â ideally after keeping uric acid below 5 for at least 1-2 years without any attacks. Long-term febuxostat is associated with mild liver enzyme changes in some, so periodic LFT monitoring is advisable.

Your uric acid is under control with febustat.it has to be taken indefinitely, don't stop it abruptly.Discontinuing the medicine should be decided by your physician

As in last year you had 3 attacks, when starting febustat40 , gout attacks temporarily become more frequent during first few months

Febuxostat dies have side effects like allergic reactions, chest pain, shortness of breath etc. However unless severe reaction, it should not be stopped suddenly. As it can cause rebound flare up of gout.
If serum uric acid levels are consistently normal and no symptoms, consult your prescribing physician regarding stopping it.

Febustat is not the first line agent for lowering serum uric acid level in gout due to increased cardiovascular risk. If you don't have any other cardiovascular risk factors like DM/SHTN/Dyslipidemia; you can continue with febuxostat. Or else, you need to stop febuxostat & switch to Allopurinol starting at 100mg & titrating as per serum urate level. Do consult with your treating physician regarding the same.

Happy to hear that you have achieved a massive milestone due to your very diciplined aproch towards your health,you have kept uric acid under good control.
It is completely understandable that you want to stop taking a daily pill.
If we stop or taper prematurely it may rebound and may cause stored crystals in your joint to destabilise and trigger a painful , sudden gout attack.
For most individuals, febustat is quite safe for long term use.however, when taken for long time it requires routine medical supervision, specifically liver and kidney function,once or twice a year .
