High hs CRP value
Hello Doctor, My check-up on today showed a significantly elevated hs-CRP of 35.50 mg/L. I would appreciate your advice on the possible cause and further investigations. I underwent root canal treatment last week and took antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication for 3 days. My blood sample was collected approximately one week later. I also had a small lip wound, which is healing. I have no fever or chills but experience morning sneezing. Other important results: • LDL: 129, HDL: 35, total cholesterol: 177, triglycerides: 76 mg/dL • HbA1c: 5.5%; fasting glucose: 92 mg/dL • Haemoglobin: 14.6 g/dL; WBC: 8.80 • Creatinine: 0.94 mg/dL; ALT: 35 U/L I also have persistent calf pain that started before my recent air travel. A doctor examined me today and felt it was not concerning. Could the elevated hs-CRP be related to the dental treatment or lip wound? Would you recommend repeating CRP or conducting further investigations?

High crp only indicates some ongoing inflammation,  it is non specific.  Take some anti inflammatory drugs for it. Your ldl is slightly high.  Cut down fats in your diet.

Hello, I have reviewed your reported blood results. Your hs-CRP of 35.50 mg/L is elevated, indicating an inflammatory response somewhere in the body. Possible causes include recent dental infection or inflammation following root canal treatment, other infections, or inflammatory conditions. A healing lip wound may contribute, although a small uncomplicated wound is less likely to explain such an elevation. Your normal WBC count is reassuring but does not exclude infection or inflammation. Importantly, persistent calf pain combined with recent air travel raises concern for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), even if the pain started before your flight. CRP alone cannot identify the underlying cause or diagnose a blood clot.
Next Steps
Seek a medical assessment of your persistent calf pain to exclude DVT. A venous Doppler ultrasound may be required based on clinical assessment. Repeat CRP and CBC after approximately 1–2 weeks, or earlier if your physician advises, to assess whether inflammation is resolving. Consult your dentist if you have persistent tooth pain, gum swelling, discharge, or other signs of dental infection. Further investigations, including ESR and targeted infection screening, should be guided by examination findings. Your LDL of 129 mg/dL and HDL of 35 mg/dL also warrant lifestyle modification and cardiovascular risk assessment. However, hs-CRP should not be used for cardiovascular risk assessment during active inflammation.
Health Tips
My recommendation: The recent dental procedure could explain the elevated hs-CRP, but this should not be assumed without excluding other causes. The most important immediate concern is your persistent calf pain following recent travel. Avoid massaging the painful calf or undertaking strenuous exercise until DVT has been excluded. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or a rapid heartbeat. If your clinical assessment is reassuring and CRP decreases on repeat testing, this would support a resolving inflammatory process. Wishing you good health!

A hs-CRP of 35.50 is quite high. A recent root canal, antibiotics and a healing lip wound can easily explain a temporary spike like this. Infections often take a week or two to fully settle. Your HDL at 35 is also a little low. That adds a little to your overall heart risk, but your other lipids and sugar look fine.
Next Steps
Repeat the hs-CRP in two to three weeks once dental healing is complete, to see if it's trending down. The calf pain that started before your flight is worth separating out. Please see a physician soon to get it specifically checked for a vein clot with a Doppler ultrasound, since a general exam alone doesn't reliably rule that out.
Health Tips
Please get that calf pain assessed urgently if it turns swollen, warm or one-sided, or if you suddenly feel breathless or unwell.
