They both are 2 different entities. Generalized edema or anasarca will have an underlying cause like hypothyroidism, anemia, heart failure or CKD etc etc ....
Some more differences are.....
1. Onset Speed: Overweight develops gradually over months or years from a calorie surplus. Generalized edema can cause rapid weight and volume gain within days or even hours.
2.The Pitting Test: Overweight fat tissue bounces back instantly. Edema leaves an indent (pit) in the skin.Skin Texture and Tightness: Overweight skin feels soft and normal. Edematous skin feels stretched, tight, shiny, or cool to the touch.
3. Distribution Patterns: Overweight causes a generalized, proportional increase in body fat across the trunk, face, and limbs. Generalized edema pools heavily in dependent areas due to gravity, such as the lower legs, ankles, feet, and lower back.
4. Associated Symptoms: Overweight does not cause pain or shortness of breath on its own. Generalized edema is frequently linked to underlying systemic issues like heart, kidney, or liver disease, often presenting with fatigue, reduced urine output, or breathlessness.

Pitting edema develops due to protein deficiency, anemia, thyroid deficiency, or systemic diseases like cardiac, renal or liver failure.
If you have any one or more of these problems and recently seem swollen, consult a physician offline.
