Effect of wisdom tooth removal on TMJ
Hi. I have TMJ Disorder which causes jaw popping when opening and closing mouth. It also causes a ringing and crackling sound in my ear along with ear pressure. I have attached my OPG Xray. I have impacted wisdom teeth on all sides and have been advised surgical extraction. But I am very scared as I already have TMJ Disorder and the surgical extraction will require prolonged mouth opening during the course of the extraction. I am scared that the prolonged mouth opening will worsen the TMJ problem. Kindly tell me will the prolonged mouth opening worsen my TMJ condition? Will I find some relief in the TMJ after wisdom tooth removal? Will it reduce pressure on the jaw joint? I have been told it will reduce pain in the TMJ, but what about the jaw popping and crackling and ear problems? Will removing wisdom teeth help in that and prevent it from becoming worse? Kindly help out.

Being a TMJ specialist, I would say, Wisdom tooth extraction will NOT provide any relief to your TMJ problems. TMJ is a jaw joint, it needs to be checked and examined by the TMJ specialist doctor. Wisdom teeth hardly have any role in  causing TMJ problems. Your disc, masticatory muscles, ligaments, condyle have to work in co ordination for your jaw to function properly. Hence removing Wisdom tooth will give you no relief You can check our website https://tmjdentistindia.com for more info
Next Steps
Consult TMJ specialist and go with the doctor who follows non steroidal, non surgical management of TMJ disorder
