If a street dog only licked your leg and there was no bite, scratch, or open wound, the risk of rabies transmission is extremely low. Rabies virus is usually transmitted through saliva entering the body via a bite, scratch, or broken skin. If the skin where the dog licked you was completely intact (no cuts, wounds, or bleeding), this situation generally falls under rabies exposure Category I, which usually does not require rabies vaccination.
Next Steps
• Wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 10–15 minutes. • Apply an antiseptic solution such as povidone iodine or chlorhexidine if available. • Check carefully if there was any unnoticed scratch, cut, or broken skin at the site. • If there was broken skin or a scratch, then it becomes Category II exposure, and anti-rabies vaccination is recommended. • If the skin was completely normal, vaccination is generally not necessary, but you may still consult a doctor if unsure.
Health Tips
• Always wash any animal saliva exposure immediately, as this significantly reduces infection risk. • Avoid touching stray animals, especially if their vaccination status is unknown. • If in future there is any bite or scratch from a dog, cat, or monkey, seek medical care immediately for rabies vaccination. • Keep track of tetanus vaccination status, as boosters may be needed after animal exposures. If you want, you can also tell me whether the skin had any small cut or abrasion at the time, and I can guide you more precisely on whether rabies vaccination is needed—feel free to consult online so we can assess the risk properly and give you the safest recommendation.

Just a lick on intact skin no bite, no wound, so rabies risk is very low. Wash the area well with soap and water, no vaccine needed in this case. Please consult me on Practo for proper advice and peace of mind!
