Age is not a factor , root canal can be done at any age. I didn't understand fully whether you have completed root canal treatment or are undergoing or are yet to begin the treatment. Root canal is not a surgical procedure so I'm not fully sure what you mean by surgery.
A mild pain on chewing on that side or pressing the tooth is common post root canal for up to a week . It gradually subsides and stops completely and differs with each case depending on the complexity of the case at the start of the treatment.
As for surgical part if for any reason it has been a long time since your root canal and pain hasn't subsided then an attempt at re root canal should be made before going got apicoectomy surgery. You can go for a cbct of the tooth to understand the anatomy so the doctor can treat the tooth better.

Hi..
It is always better to seek a second opinion in case of doubts. Due to better instruments and advancement in technology these days we rarely get to see surgical procedures being performed as most of the time the infection can be treated non surgically with simple root canal treatment though it may require multiple sittings.
Next Steps
Please take all the reports and X-rays from the treating doctor and then visit another dentist preferably an endodontist.
