A small cyst in the hip region persisting for 5 years and increasing in size is usually not dangerous, but it will not go away on its own. Common causes include:
What it could be:
Sebaceous cyst (epidermoid cyst): common, benign, grows slowly.
Lipoma (fat tissue swelling): soft, mobile, painless.
Rarely, other soft tissue swellings.
What you should do:
If the cyst is painless and not infected, it is usually harmless.
However, since the size is increasing, the definitive treatment is surgical removal (a minor procedure, usually under local anesthesia).
Do not attempt to squeeze or puncture it at home, as it can get infected.
Visit a general surgeon for proper examination and advice.
When to seek immediate care:
If it becomes red, painful, warm, or starts discharging pus â sign of infection.
Rapid increase in size or hardness.

Hi, a cyst can be a lipoma or a sebaceous cyst. If lipoma it will not give any pain or trouble. It’s mostly filled with fat and can be removed for cosmetic purpose. No chances of progressing to cancer. If it is a sebaceous cyst it can become bigger, get infected that can cause pain. If it’s a sebaceous cyst it is better to get it removed immediately as once it gets infected it might need two procedures to completely remove the cyst wall and may leave a bigger scar.
