Cough blocked nose
I have had a blocked nose for one week. One nostril gets blocked at a time. Mucus feels stuck in my throat but does not come out easily. I occasionally have a headache but no fever. I have already used Nasivion nasal spray. Please advise on the cause and appropriate treatment and medicine

Hello, based on your symptoms, this could be due to allergic rhinitis, viral rhinitis, or sinus inflammation with post-nasal drip. Alternating blockage of the nostrils can also occur due to the normal nasal cycle. Advice: Use saline nasal spray 3–4 times daily to help clear the nasal passages and loosen mucus. Avoid dust, smoke, strong perfumes, and other potential allergens. Drink plenty of fluids and consider warm fluids to soothe throat irritation. Avoid prolonged use of Nasivion (oxymetazoline), as using it for more than 3 days can worsen nasal congestion. If symptoms suggest an allergy, an antihistamine or steroid nasal spray may help, but the appropriate medicine depends on your medical history and examination.
Next Steps
Do you have sneezing, itching, or watery nasal discharge? Is the mucus thick, yellow/green, or clear? For how many days have you been using Nasivion?

A blocked nose that switches sides, thick mucus dripping down the throat, and a mild headache without fever usually points to allergic rhinitis or sinus congestion rather than a plain cold. A full week of this pattern is common and very treatable.
Next Steps
Steam inhalation and a saline nasal rinse through the day can help clear the mucus and ease the blockage. If Nasivion hasn't fully helped, please see a general physician or an ENT specialist, since it isn't meant for continuous daily use beyond a few days.
Health Tips
Stopping a decongestant spray after long daily use can make congestion rebound and feel worse for a few days, so taper off under guidance rather than suddenly.
