What is Acceptance?
Acceptance, in terms of mental health, is when you simple allow your emotions and thoughts to be. You don't judge them or label them as "bad" or "negative". Sometimes, with anxiety, you might feel a tightness in your chest and you would normally describe that as "painful" instead, try to explain how it feels like "heavy".
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness and acceptance go hand in hand in many ways. Mindfulness is used to stay in the moment so that you can observe those anxious feelings.
âI am noticing that I feel anxious(mindfulness). I don't have to like it but I accept that it is there.(acceptance).
2 Things to Try:
One issue that comes up with anxiety is spiraling thoughts. When your thoughts start to get out of control and just keep rolling and getting bigger and bigger and scarier, it pulls you out of the present moment (mindfulness).
Instead of letting your thoughts spiral, try this:
Tell yourself (or your partner or friend), âIâm really stressed about money right now. But I canât do anything about it over the weekend or until I can sit down with my budget later. Iâm going to put these thoughts away until I can focus on it and figure it out."
When you are experiencing anxiety, pause for a moment and instead of focusing on the tightening in your chest, the racing thoughts etc...pay attention to your senses.
What can you smell right now? What are you hearing? What are you touching? Don't judge anything, just feel it and it can help ground you in the here and now.
These techniques might seem simple but they do work. And they do take practice.

It’s important to manage anxiety in healthier ways, such as exercise, balanced diet and seeing a psychiatrist for the right medication along with talking therapy called cognitive behaviour therapy.
Alcohol predisposes to wide number of diseases like Liver dysfunction, gout, varicose veins, acidity, tremors, palpitations, high blood pressure and headaches. It also aggravates anxiety symptoms.
We fall prey to this vicious cycle of reducing our anxiety by alcohol after its temporary relief, it ends up only to aggravate anxiety symptoms. Therefore it’s important to come out of this cycle and adopt healthier ways of coping with anxiety.
