It is a question that is frequently thought or asked to homoeopaths. People, on the first place, avoid to visit a homoeopath just because they think that homoeopaths ask too many questions and often ask about their inter- personal relationships also.
When one thinks about homoeopathy or when he/she is asked about what is homoeopathy; the first thing that pops-up in mind is that they are the doctors who ask a lot of questions. And the second thing is that they prescribe little pills.
Let us sort this major problem about homoeopathy and understand the need of homoeopath to ask these many questions.
Homoeopathy is a science that has individualization as one of its main pillar; or rather a strong pillar on which it stands firmly on.
Now this is something new to read, isn’t it? Next question that comes to mind is what do you mean by individualization? As we all know that, no two individuals in the world are exactly alike; even twins aren’t exactly same – their likes and dislikes vary, their basic behavioral pattern vary, their reactions to a particular situation vary and the list goes on and on. Similarly, no two individuals suffering from a disease, even though the same disease are identical. And homoeopathy is the only science that appreciates this difference. So individualization, in simple terms, means to identify these subtle or major differences and considering them important for the prescription of a remedy.
Let us understand this better using a common example. When we think of a common ailment the first ailment that comes to our minds is headache. So let us begin with headache. There are about 1000 medicines for headache in homoeopathy. So it is the skill set of the homoeopath that helps him select one medicine out of one thousand for a patient. Now coming back to the topic of discussion at hand, why so many questions? The answer to that question lies in here, as well. The “too-many questions” are asked so that a homoeopath can select one medicine to prescribe for that “particular” patient. The common questions asked would be where the head hurts the most, what factors have their influence on pain – such as sleep, eating, vomiting etc. and a few more like what impact does this headache have upon you.
Now this might sound stupid. But the fact is that, in reality, having a headache actually has different impacts on different individuals. For example, one might get disturbed because headache hampers his daily activities; other might get irritated because headache might not let him sleep; some might have watery eyes during headache and many more. And these individualizing factors become more important especially in chronic cases (here it could be chronic headache or migraine).
In fact, understanding the cause of headache (or any other disease) is also important. There are varieties of reasons for a simple headache. Like one might have a headache after going out for a walk in cold air/wind; other might suffer because of constipation; still some other might suffer from excessive emotions etc.
Hence the concept of individualization becomes important and necessary. So a homoeopath asks “too – many questions” to understand your individuality.
Now since we are discussing a lot about the number of questions a homoeopath asks; let us also discuss why they ask you about your inter-personal relationships.
Interfering in your personal matters is never the aim of a homoeopath. A homoeopath needs to understand your behavioral patterns and your mental – makeup to understand you, as a patient and also as an individual. One shall know that homoeopathic medicines have the power to modify a person’s behavioral patterns efficiently. But before modifying it, the physician needs to understand and differentiate between normal and abnormal patterns; and to recognize it well one needs to know the mental make – up.
Let us understand this also with an example. Anger, for instance, is a normal human emotion. But anger at slightest trifle is abnormal; but the same anger is considered normal when there is some sort of bias. The reaction of a person in anger is also an important aspect to consider. Some people might become violent while others may get absolutely silent and suppress their anger.
So the base line is that understanding varied human patterns is important for a homoeopath to prescribe him one medicine. So nothing a homoeopath asks you is in vain or for any useless cause. It is for your betterment only. Trust the process of healing and have faith in your homoeopath.
