(PRRT) is a targeted systemic radioactive treatment for Neuroendocrine Tumors.
Differentiated neuroendocrine tumors express a receptor called the SomatostatinReceptor (SSTR). These receptors are the targets which are used by the somatostatin analog tagged to radioactive molecules (Lu 177 or Ac225) to attach themselves to the neuroendocrine tumor cells. The radioactive molecules then emit beta or alpha rays which deliver radiation to the cells while sparing the surrounding normal cells. The radiation delivered to the tumour slows down or kills the tumor cells completely.
The commonest side effect of PRRT is fatigue or less commonly, a reversible mild transient reduction in blood counts. The treatment can be done on day care basis and does not require prolonged admission. The treatment is best done under a Nuclear medicine physician trained and experienced in such therapies.
